Part #1
What do I mean by “totally clean speech”? I mean that kind of speech that never, for any reason, includes the slightest hint of a swear word, curse word, or substitute for such – never, for any reason, uses a word that is dirty or conveys an off-color innuendo – never, for any reason, speaks the name of God unless talking reverently to Him or about Him.
Some readers may ridicule this idea, but I challenge my thinking readers to consider it; to discuss it with family and friends. If you work with young people, challenge them to consider it. Why is it that character demands totally clean speech every minute of every day?
Consider the character trait respect. A person of character exercises respect consistently – toward everyone. The more highly we respect someone, the less likely we are to use foul language in that person’s presence. A man who is ushered into the presence of a great king or powerful leader whom he respects will speak carefully. The more highly he respects the king or leader, the more carefully he will select his words. He will not swear or curse, which would surely indicate that he considers the leader to have little value. He will strive to use good language and clean words to demonstrate his respect. Respect for others requires that we refrain from devaluing them by using bad language. How do you treat those around you?
Character demands totally clean speech as a sign of our respect.
Consider the character trait self-control. A person of character exercises self-control consistently – in every situation. He or she exercises self-control over every part of the body, including the tongue. The more we develop a desire for true moral excellence, the more likely it is that we will exercise self-control over our words as well as our actions. A woman who is interviewing for a new job will exercise self-control over her tongue to make a good impression. She recognizes that swearing and other uncouth language are not signs of education and intellect. Self-control requires that we refrain from sinking to the level of those who lack a vocabulary large enough to avoid foul speech.
Character demands totally clean speech as a sign of our self-control.
Consider the character trait responsibility. A person of character exercises responsibility to those around by setting a good example in speech. It is widely recognized that swearing, dirty language, off-color innuendos, and improper use of God’s name are not signs of great character. Educators and parents, in whatever setting, warn young people not to use such language. We may set rules against such usage, with appropriate punishment. We show, by our warnings and rules, that we know unclean speech is unacceptable. Responsibility requires that we set the best possible example for young people and others by keeping our own speech totally clean.
Character demands totally clean speech as a sign of our responsibility.
Let me challenge you to access a complete list of character traits and pursue this study further. I plan to write a few more thoughts about it in my next blog. I don’t believe we can find one quality of character that permits or encourages swearing, cursing, and other such language. I believe character demands totally clean speech.
That’s the view from my chair. What’s your view?
