Character Companions® Series (children 3 – 8 years of age)

Books for Ages 3 to 8

Character books are the very best way to teach moral values to anyone, young or old. We learn from characters in stories even when we have no intention of learning.

Character Companions® Series Books, perfect for children from age three up to and including age eight, let children learn character from enchanting small animals. Each book is purpose-written to teach character so you won’t be trying to find the character traits in the stories. They are right there on the surface. They are even in the titles.

Written by a best-selling author, these books are a feast for children’s senses. They hear sounds in the books. They see colors and actions. They touch textures. They smell things and imagine they taste things, too. Images help visual learners; words and songs assist auditory learners; and actions boost understanding for kinesthetic learners.

Christopher Cat’s Character Club

Then, just as though they were right there in Farmer Green’s barnyard, your children follow Christopher. They hear his plan for a character club to help the other cats learn character. They watch him plan his club. They go to the first club meeting. They learn more about character. They can’t resist the catchy Character Song, and sing along with the cats and kittens. You soon hear them singing the song as they play – and reminding one another of the need for character.

Little Zoh’s Submissive Trunk

Books for Ages 3 to 8Little Zoh’s Submissive Trunk invites a baby elephant to help you teach OBEDIENCE. His name is Zoh: the Japanese word for elephant. Zoh captures children’s attention by plodding sadly and tearfully onto page one. Since children don’t like to hear that they must be obedient, Zoh fools them with the word submissive.

He tells them his trunk is not submissive, explaining, “It won’t do what I wish it to do.” Then Zoh lets children travel jungle paths with him, seeing the trouble his obstinate trunk causes. Just when Zoh is about to give up, his mother explains that baby elephants must teach their trunks to do what they want them to do. Children sing the lesson lustily with Zoh, going through elephant actions with it.

Stinky Skunk’s Self Control

Books for Ages 3 to 8Children will hold their noses when you introduce Stinky Stinky Skunk’s Self-Control. Stinky is a great helper, though, when it comes to teaching SELF-CONTROL. How could any child refuse to listen to a smelly little skunk? Back and forth, they’ll follow her, as she goes to school, to play in the forest, to her home, and over again.

With glee, they’ll join the other animals as they chant, “Stinky, control yourself!” Then they’ll watch eagerly to see if Stinky’s tail goes up like a flag. If it does, they’ll giggle, but they will get the message, too. Stinky will help you teach your children to control themselves – and to control their anger. Along the way, she will help them learn, too, that bullying is not the way to make friends. Expect to sing the “Self-Control Song” often!

Georgey Giraffe’s Giant Respect

Books for Ages 3 to 8What child doesn’t love giraffes? That’s why they get excited when you invite in Georgey of Georgey Giraffe’s Giant Respect to help them learn RESPECT. Right from the first page, they see other little giraffes acting disrespectful. They watch to see if Georgey acts the same, and smile when he chooses to do right.

Georgey doesn’t have to learn to respect others. He already knows how to do that – a little. Your children may be the same, and may think Georgey is doing everything right as they follow him across the African grassland. Georgey tells them, though, that a little respect is not enough. He wants to show big respect. Children listen or read with bated breath when Georgey gets a chance to stick out his neck and do just that. “Georgey’s Respect Song” fixes the lesson in their minds as does the sweet recipe at the end of the book.

Pansy Pig’s Patience Pit

Books for Ages 3 to 8“Muckie-wuckie” is a favorite phrase in Pansy Pig’s Patience Pit. It’s used by Pansy to show her lack of PATIENCE. Children love to repeat it with Pansy, and imagine they are sloshing around the muddy farmyard, following the little brown pig. It’s fun to say “muckie-wuckie” and it makes impatience sound as wrong as it is.

They see Pansy make “flat, muddy pancakes out of every bright yellow flower.” They watch her stick her angry little snout into everyone’s business, and shake their heads at her naughtiness. They watch her throw a temper tantrum, and silently think about a time when they themselves did that. When Pansy has to go into the patience pit, your children will join the other pigs in delight as they sing the easy-to-remember “Patience Song” to her.

Father tells Cubby that he needs to learn responsibility, and your children learn, too as Father explains it carefully to Cubby. Your children listen or read with curiosity from the moment Katie is born, and crawls as fast as she can up Mother Kangaroo’s big grey-brown stomach.

They see Katie drop into Mother’s warm, dark pouch and hide. Then they peek into the pouch. They crawl in with her, and feel the pouch bounce as Mother bounds across the grass. Rickey Raccoon’s Trustworthiness Tree

Books for Ages 3 to 8Now that Ricky, of Ricky Raccoon’s Trustworthiness Tree, knows the meaning of TRUSTWORTHINESS, he’s eager to help your children understand it. The little masked rascal is not at all trustworthiness when children first meet him in the story. He is, in fact, very much the opposite, giving children a peek into what others think of him.

When Aunt Relly stamps her foot and says, “Ricky, you are not trustworthy. You are not showing trustworthiness,” children begin to get the idea. They think Ricky does, too, and are surprised that he just grins and says he doesn’t care. They scamper after Ricky as he trots along from one mischievous caper to the next. They are there when he learns – the hard way – that trustworthiness really is important. There is a “Trustworthiness Song” for Ricky to learn, of course, and for your children to sing with actions.

Dewey Deer’s Love Daisies

Books for Ages 3 to 8Dewey Deer’s Love Daisies presents a baby deer to help you teach the meaning of LOVE as a character trait. Dewey enchants children, from his soft, wet nose to the tip of his white tail flag. They sit up and listen or read closely from the first sentence: “Dewey Deer’s bad luck started just after Mother left him.”

They imagine themselves curled up with Dewey, trying to be very still. They can tell Dewey’s mother loves him with that soft, teddy bear kind of love they themselves like. As they stay close beside him, though, they soon learn that she has another kind of love for Dewey. They really tune in at the bottom of page four when Dewey first asks, “What is love?” Both Dewey and your children learn the meaning from Mother Deer. Then they see love in action, and understand even better. The “Love Song” seals the meaning in their memories.
